Obituary for Daniel Bruce Sikes

What is life if not lived with radiant light and an abundance of love? These two measures of life well-lived will be forever present in the lives of those who loved Daniel Bruce Sikes the best. On the morning of January 1, 2023 at the age of 62, Dan was proudly and happily called back to his heavenly home to live for an eternity. A devout follower of Christ, devoted husband, and dedicated father, Dan lived every day with the purpose of putting a smile on every face and eliciting laughter from everyone he could.
Dan was born in Charleston, South Carolina on March 26, 1960. He met his gorgeous, wonderful wife, Barbara, in Macon, GA. After his niece, Jessica Brown Webster, forced him into a decision through a cleverly written Christmas card, Dan and Barbara happily married on January 3, 1991 (Yes, this was his wife’s birthday). In 1992, with the hint of Krystals on his breath, he held his only child, Mary Catherine, before anyone else. She was so perfect, they both decided not to have any more children. Dan was best known for his constant silliness (Yes, “I think I get my sillies from you,” Dad.), his ability to make any situation into a song, and for his incredibly dramatic and cartoonish impersonations. He built the tallest of Krystal burger box towers, made every waitress he ever had laugh (either with him or at him, he didn’t care), and committed every day to being the best person he could be. His legacy will continue through his daughter, who learned some of her favorite parts about herself directly through him. His love of music, steadfast morality, sense of humor, and constant urge to be a light unto others will continue until they are reunited in paradise.
Though his family was one of his greatest loves in life, his love for his Heavenly Father is what allowed him to joyfully join the multitudes in an eternity of praise and worship. He devoted most of his days to the study of God’s word and lived to follow Christ whole heartedly. Though his life was filled with laughter and comedy, it was not without pain and heartbreak. He quietly and courageously faced life’s obstacles without hardening of his heart or losing his joy. He has finally crossed that finished line and in doing so, he has fought the good fight; he has finished the race; he has kept the faith. (Timothy 4:7)
He is proceeded in death by his mother, Nancy Sikes, his first wife, Pam, and his stepdaughter, Katie; all of whom he loved and cherished every remaining second of his life. He is survived by his strong-willed, devoted, and very patient wife of 32 years, Barbara Metzger Sikes; his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Catherine and Mike Tyrrell; his father, Bobby Sikes; his siblings (all of whom he has absolutely, never, ever pranked, pushed in a pool, or picked on), Patti (Kent) Asher, David (Christine) Sikes, and Doug Sikes; his favorite Macon cook and mother-in-law, Mary Brown; nieces and nephews, Kaci (Jonathan) Bishop, Keith (Melissa) Asher, Cari Asher, Nina (Matthew) Taylor, Sasha Sikes, Jessica (Andrew) Webster, Taylor Lacey, Hannah Lacey, and Samantha Hammock; several grand nieces and nephews; and so many more “adopted” kids who affectionately called him Papa Dan.
So, what is life if not lived with radiant light and an abundance of love? We who loved Dan would not know, because he filled every second of our time with it.
