Obituary for Lamar "Marty" Poole

Lamar "Marty" Poole, 74, of Macon, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2023. Mr. Poole was born on December 16, 1948, in Garfield, Kentucky, to the late Mr. William Chester Poole and Mrs. Idelle Smiley. Mr. Poole was a longtime member of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Kentucky. Celebration of Life services will be announced at a later date by his son Matthew Poole.

Mr. Poole retired from Brown and Williamson, after 30+ years of service, where he worked on innovative technologies and equipment far before it was mainstream. He was extremely talented at his work and had an excellent career. He was very well known and respected in his workplace and forged many lifelong friendships during his employment.

Known by his friends and family as Marty, Mr. Poole was a beloved figure in the local hot rod community and all throughout Central Georgia. He won over 40+ trophies at car shows throughout the state exhibiting the multiple automobiles that he cared for with love and passion throughout his life. Mr. Poole was fittingly a bit of a “Pool Shark” in his heyday, with a half dozen trophies from Billiards competitions to his name. In his youth he worked at his step-fathers pool hall, collecting the quarters in the machine, cleaning the premises, and developing his eye and technical skill by playing at every opportunity he could. Mr. Poole also assisted with his father at his auto shop in his youth, where he worked with multiple time NASCAR Champion Darrell Waltrip and painted his first race car with his father. He forged a beautiful life and career for himself after facing countless adversities through his youth, but he never once forgot where he came from. He excelled at everything he put his mind to, from work, to competitions, and to life itself.

He enjoyed a fruitful 23-year retirement where he lived his life how he wanted and when he wanted on nobody else’s terms. He loved spending time with his family and friends, eating out at local restaurants, attending car shows, watching his favorite soap operas every day, going to the theater to watch the newest movies, music concerts, and attending live sporting events. Mr. Poole was an avid sports fan, with passions for auto racing, professional wrestling, soccer, the Georgia Bulldogs, and all Atlanta sports teams. He enjoyed attending all of them in person throughout his life, including multiple NASCAR championship races, major Soccer tournaments, the Super Bowl, and Wrestlemania.

Known for his kindness, dedication, infinite positive energy, courage and generosity, Mr. Poole will be missed by a tremendous amount of people far and wide.

Mr. Poole was preceded in death by his parents Bill Poole and Idelle Smiley, his step-father Raymond Smiley and his brother Ritchie Smiley.
