Obituary for Nell McElheney Hayes

Nell McElheney Hayes, 94, of Macon, passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2022. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 26, at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of FairHaven Funeral Home with Elder Dan Bryant officiating. The family will greet friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Friday, March 25, at the funeral home.

Ms. Hayes was born on February 21, 1928, in Monticello, Georgia, to the late Homer McElheney and Myrtle Clay McElheney. She was a lifelong member of Fellowship Primitive Baptist Church in Monticello, and also attended Grace Primitive Baptist Church in Macon. Ms. Hayes played basketball with her sisters at Hillsboro High School. She retired from Robins Air Force Base, where she worked in acquisitions for the C130. Ms. Hayes spent much of her free time traveling, baking, and playing cards, particularly Setback. She was a very loving and nurturing lady, who liked to volunteer in her community. Ms. Hayes will be missed by all that knew and loved her.

Ms. Hayes was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Emory Coyle “Casey” Hayes; daughter, Ruth “Ruthie” Hayes Smith; grandson, Logan Hayes Smith; and seven siblings.

Ms. Hayes is survived by daughter, Cindy Hayes Smith (Wayne); granddaughters, Leighanna Smith, Kacey Smith, and Kristy Ross (Erwin); great-grandson, Alex Ross; son-in-law, Allen Smith; several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
